TSA Chief: Bad Hygiene 'Degraded' Underwear Bomb

You likely remember the failed underwear bomb aboard a 2009 flight to Detroit that sent Umar Abdulmutallab to prison for life. What you may not know: The plot seems to have failed thanks in part to lousy hygiene. In a panel discussion yesterday, TSA chief John Pistole said Abdulmutallab had been wearing his underwear bomb for more than two weeks, the Array reports. (That was apparently to get used to it, Detroit's WXYZ previously reported.) When asked whether the bomb's fuse had become "damp" as a result, Pistole said, "Let's say it was degraded," as the audience chuckled. "We're getting ...

Underwear bomb aboard 2009 flight failed because it was sullied by suicide bomber

An explosive smuggled aboard a Northwest Airlines flight in 2009 failed to detonate because the bomber wore the same underwear for two weeks straight and soiled the device, TSA officials say.

The explosive only caught fire in Umar Farouk Abdulmutallab’s pants when he tried to set it off on the descent to Detroit Metropolitan Airport aboard Northwest Airlines Flight 253 on Dec. 25.

The device was “degraded,” TSA administrator John Pistole said at the Aspen Institute Thursday when he described why the Nigerian’s bomb failed to moderator Catherine Herridge.

“Thank goodness for bad hygiene,” Herridge added.

TSA leader: Underwear bomber's device didn't go off because of hygiene

His suicide mission on a plane headed for Detroit on Christmas Day 2009 could have ruined the lives of hundreds. But the bomb inside Umar Farouk Abdulmutallab underwear failed to go off, and hygiene appears to be the reason why. The Nigerian man was trained in Yemen under Anwar al-Awlaki, a radical American-born cleric and one of the best-known al-Qaida figures. Abdulmutallab wore the explosive in his underwear aboard Northwest Airlines Flight 253, which originated in Amsterdam with nearly 300 people aboard. The bomb didn’t detonate, but did start a small fire in his lap. Now, the head of the ...

Underpants bomber failed in mission to blow up airliner 'because he wore same pair of underwear for two weeks'
    • Umar Abdulmutallab was on suicide mission when he attempted to detonate a bomb in his underpants as the plane approached Detroit
    • The bomb however failed to detonate aboard the flight, which was carrying nearly 300 people
    • Head of the Transportation Security Administration has said bomb failed to detonate because of how long Abdulmutallab had been wearing underwear

The notorious underwear bomber's plot in 2009 to blow up a plane on Christmas Day failed because the explosives became 'degraded' after he wore the same pair of underpants for two weeks, according to a U.S. official. Nigerian Umar Farouk Abdulmutallab was on a suicide mission when he attempted to detonate a bomb in his underpants as the plane, en route from Amsterdam, approached Detroit. The bomb however failed to detonate aboard the flight, which was carrying nearly 300 people, but caused a brief fire that caused burns to his groin. He was sentenced to life without parole in February ...

Underwear bomber’s bomb too filthy to explode after wearing it for 2 weeks

It was five years ago when the underwear bomber boarded a plane headed for Detroit and managed to light his bomb-laced underwear on fire. While the bomb caught fire, it didn't explode, sparing the lives of all on board. The reason that the explosives did not ignite was due to the man's hygiene, or lack of it in this case, according to the Telegraph on July 25. The underwear bomber boarded a Northwest Airlines flight in Amsterdam which would take him to Detroit, Michigan on Christmas Day 2009. The man from Nigeria, who was British educated, managed to light his ...

Bad hygiene to blame for failed ‘underwear bomber’ plot

A Nigerian man who hid explosives in his underwear and tried to blow up a transatlantic flight to the US reportedly failed because he hadn’t changed his underpants for two weeks. Dubbed the ‘underwear bomber,’ Umar Farouk Abdulmutallab smuggled explosives on a Northwest Airlines flight on Christmas Day in 2009 but his poor personal hygiene meant the device was “degraded” and failed to detonate, NewsCorp reports. The plane was forced to make an emergency landing in Detroit, and left Abdulmutallab with burns to his groin. Transportation Security Administration John Pistole told the Aspen Institute this week the device failed because ...

Abdulmutallab terror plot failed because he wore pant for two weeks

Underwear bomber plot failed because he ‘wore same pants for two weeks’ US official says terror plot failed because bomber did not change his undergarments for two weeks and soiled the explosives The 2009 “underpants bomb” plot failed because the terrorist had been wearing his explosive-laden undergarments for more than two weeks and soiled the explosives, a senior US official said. Umar Abdulmutallab sent shockwaves through US intelligence when he successfully smuggled a bomb onto a Detroit-bound airliner on Christmas day three years ago. The British-educated Nigerian was able to light the bomb but it failed to explode, causing minor ...

TSA Official: Bomber Wore Explosives-Packed Underwear for Two Weeks

Al-Qaida bomber Umar Abdulmutallab's plot to blow up a plane with a bomb hidden in his underwear might have been successful if he had better hygiene and changed his undergarments more often, a senior Transportation Security Administration official says. Instead, TSA Administrator John Pistole, a former deputy director of the Federal Bureau of Investigation, said Abdulmutallab had worn the bomb-packed underwear for two weeks before boarding a Detroit-bound airliner from Great Britain on Christmas Day in 2009, reports Array in London. "He had it with him for over two weeks," Pistole said during a forum discussion at the Aspen Security ...

    Dirty underwear spoils bomb plot

A MAN who tried to blow up a transatlantic flight by detonating explosives in his underpants failed because explosives had become "degraded" after he wore the same underwear for two weeks, it has been claimed. Known as the "underwear bomber" Umar Farouk Abdulmutallab was caught trying to blow up a plane on Christmas Day in 2009 en route to the US from Amsterdam. The plane made an emergency landing in Detroit after the bomb failed to go off. US officials traced the bomb plot to al Qaida and at his trial the Nigerian called the bomb a "blessed weapon" to ...

So in the end we were saved not by the diligence of TSA, DHS, NSA FBI and assorted other three-letter agencies, but by the simple fact that the filthy bum never changed his underwear.

The same thing happened to Richard Reid, he walked around London in the rain and soaked through his shoes completely, thus the fuse wouldn't work.
