Okay, I hope we're not going to start an Islamophobia thing here. Christians have done more than their fair share of killing, raping, and pillaging throughout the ages. Probably the only religion that hasn't advocated violence in the history of the world is Buddhism. (Quakers, too, though not sure their beliefs are accurately characterized as a religion.)

Extremism is extremism is extremism, no matter where it comes from. And unfortunately, it often gets yoked to ideology, which includes religion.

For the most part Christians gave that stuff up during the Reformation, if not for Lent. The Ottomans did manage to achieve some semblance of a secular state, but they are history & Islam in general has yet to experience its Reformation.

I lived for a spell in Perugia, which was part of the Papal States. On the city walls is a plaque made in the late 1800's comemorating Perugia's liberation "from the sad tyranny of the popes". Secular power was not good for the catholic church nor for those subject to it.

The killing of the emo's in Iraq is pretty much the same as the killing of Matt Shepherd in Wyoming, because he was different. Same motivation. Nothing to do with religion.

nachtnebel, lucky you! I love Perugia. Were you there as a student or as part of your job?

P.S. Members of the Lord's Resistance Army in Uganda make the sign of the cross before they rape, mutilate, or kill people. And they quote the Bible all the time.

And apparently Pistole goes to church as well. Yet in the final analysis each human being is culpable for what he/she could have or should have known, should have/could have avoided just by using common human reason. Won't be any excuse for being wrong in these types of cases, no matter how many times you quote biblical justifications. Nuremburg is just a foretaste.
