Dearborn police arrested Ali Hammoud, a prominent leader in the Arab-American community, and held him overnight, based solely on the fact that he had the same name as a person who was wanted for funding terrorist groups abroad.

This of course was based on the stupidity of the police in not realizing that "Hammoud" and "Ali" are extremely common names, combined with a desire to be big heroes in the Global War on Terror (TM).

This is the logical consequence of See Something, Say Something, and the general fear-mongering of the Ministry of Homeland Security.

    It is shameful.

And this person should sue all involved (officers, agencies, departments, etc) to make a example maybe if all involved including the officers this BS would stop.

I did a quick search and found 21 Ali Hammouds in the Dearborn White Pages. I found only 2 Joseph Smiths. This fellow was arrested at his house as the police were out investigating a reported break -in. Sounds like the Harry Gates case in Massachusetts, with this terrorist angle as a late add-on.

Just to add context, the Detroit metro area has an unusually high ratio of Middle Eastern immigrants.

It is not unsurprising to find more Ali Hammouds than Joseph Smiths in this area.

Yes, that's why I conclude that this "oops we thought he was a terrorist" is something that was dreamed up later. Nobody with any familiarity with the community would have assumed they where dealing with the one and only Ali Hammoud (as if he's going to be waiting around to be arrested in any case.).

It's worth quoting Martin Niemöller again, now and forever:

First they came for the communists,
    and I didn't speak out because I wasn't a communist.
Then they came for the trade unionists,
    and I didn't speak out because I wasn't a trade unionist.
Then they came for the Jews,
    and I didn't speak out because I wasn't a Jew.
    Then they came for me
and there was no one left to speak out for me.

Lisa, I love that you pull that quote out frequently. Please don't ever stop.

I first read it in college. It was a cold slap across my face I will never forget.

I am grateful that there are some of us who understand its implications.

unfortunately, it is happening now, with every erasure of the bill of rights, with every step the federals take over the line toward tyranny. the country is sick, weak, and unwilling to protect its patrimony. These *ssholes in government know it, and are just waiting....
