AAA and a research firm predicted a 4% increase in Thanksgiving travel this year. (PDF) This projection was based on economic factors, though.

Oh, gosh, sorry! You're right -- I must've been looking at the guy's join date. Will add an edit to fix. Thanks.

    Found this update from April:

Amtrak on Target to Set Annual Passenger Record
So if this trend continues, by the end of the fiscal year on October 31, Amtrak's annual traffic will be up 3.5-4% over the previous fiscal year.

Meanwhile airline departures are at their lowest number since 2002 (have to check passenger enplanements to get the whole picture).

This news stands to reason for most of the members here at TUG; however, getting the airlines to admit the reason for these figures would be like shoving an elephant through a mouse-hole.

Easier than shoving a pedosmurf through a mouse-hole though.

I've been such a vocal proponent of rail travel, particularly to and from the Northeast to Florida that my daughter commented that I sounded like I was selling for Amtrak.

Just today I recommended it to an associate building a winter home near Orlando. He said a co-worker had already convinced him that the train was far better and he was planning to use the auto-train in September. My cousin is doing the same in August after I suggested it a few months ago.

It just makes sense from a cost perspective for a couple or family. It is also more environmentally friendly, less stressful and far more reliable (virtually no weather delays or cancellations) and is still a civilized, TSA free, means of travel.
