Everyone read about it? 18 wheeler rams train, people die. Wonder if the truck driver was half-asleep.

yes. terrible, about a dozen injured and several dead. I looked into the zephyr as part of a trip to Colorado a while back. Zephyr is not a very good Amtrak line, evidently, lots of delays, some track issues, although this may have changed as of late.

    Half Asleep, or distracted.

It's amazing how fast the security-facists on some of my Railroad boards immediately jumped to "ZOMG TEWWOWISTS!".

Predictably, some of the sheep are suggesting that TSA needs to become more involved in rail "security":

RGJ.com: Amtrak train wreck reveals security weakness

The issue? One passenger is still accounted for. Since you can buy your tickets on board, it takes a while to get an exact count. Passersby help those who weren't injured move on.

    Let the railroads handle this.

There aren't enough people in TSA to guarantee 100% track safety, 100% of the time. Too many miles, too remote and a job better left to the professionals (railroad companies).

Heck, there aren't enough people in TSA to guarantee air safety, though they'd like for us to believe there is such a thing.
