    ... because the plane first flown in 1955 can do it better & cheaper :D

    I've been on the flight line during U-2 ops and even for an old design it is an impressive aircraft. What would be even better is building new SR-71's or its derivative.

    & the one first flown in 1962 (A-12 variant) is almost as good as the U-2 (or better, depending on your perspective).

    Things have gone downhill ever since. The A-12/YF-12/SR-71 was the last of Kelly Johnson's planes, although he did get the get F-117 started.

    The SR-71 family clearly had altitude and speed as advantages over the U-2. Nothing like going fast and being at high altitude when making a pass over unfriendly territory.

    Space based imagery is pretty amazing but the problem is putting assets over a POI just when you need it there. That's where air breathing vehicles win the toss as surveillance tools.
