Creepy surveillance: Mannequins secretly record shoppers and profile behaviors
The next time you are window shopping and you see the mannequins, know that Almax EyeSee mannequins may also see you since the life-sized dolls watch you while recording your behavior.

It's doubtful you ever stop to think about all of the overhead security surveillance cameras in stores, but you are aware it's there. A new twist on secretly spying on shoppers would put the camera at your eye level because it is hidden in the eye socket of $5,130 Almax mannequins. If you think dolls are a bit creepy, then how about life-sized dolls that can record a shopper's "age range, gender, race, number of people and time spent" either window shopping or browsing inside the store?

You know, from a marketing POV, the info this can yield is sheer gold. It can help you to tell what clothes are being observed on a more consistent basis, so you can adjust inventory accordingly. It can assist with preventing theft and provide proof in some cases.

That being said, it certainly is pretty darn creepy Sunny! I swear, it is getting where you can't even scratch your nose in public without someone analyzing it for some indication of a way to determine a sales angle on it. I will be wary of even more stuff while I walk through stores now.

I think the retailers are more concerned about shrinkage that anything else.

Hey, I'm very concerned about that, too! Everytime I buy a new outfit and don't wear it right away, it shrinks all by itself when I finally do wear it.

Oh, wait a minute... That isn't the kind of shrinkage you're talking about, is it?

Only if you liberated it from Nordstrom's inside an official TSA iPad vest.

Nah, they have a zillion other cameras for that -- just look up. The ceiling is covered with 'em. And those are the ones you can see.

I think the mannequins are there for what people seem interested in - or not interested in. Demographics are key too.

Here's a very good post by Kashmir Hill on why spying mannequins creep us out. Long quote in the story by Ryan Calo -- is really is all about law and robots. Worth the quick read.

They should just be up front about it and use a great big eyeball that rotates to the person of interest. Maybe a robotized eyebrow above it.

It's getting to the point where maybe humanity would be better served by one huge, worldwide EMP burst.

Stock up on firewood first. It could be a long cold winter with zero functioning infrastructure.

Might be better just to kill the mannequin.

yes, well, there *is* that.... and I suppose it would be a real bummer if you had a pacemaker...

still, a fellow can dream, can't he?
