Lisa Simeone & Christopher Elliot want data, so let's at least assemble links in this thread.

As part of the 10th anniversary paranoia, it seems that lots of flights are being diverted and grounded in an "abundance of caution". List list them.

Looks like some guys took too long a dump on AA34 LAX-JFK:

http://wireupdate.com/wires/20026/report-american-airlines-flight-34-intercepted-by-fighter-jets/

(edited to add new link below - info is that passengers were drunk not really paying attention to flight crews and using lav a lot)

The prior southwest BWI flight post by Mike seems to have been over going to the lav as well:

By the way, the report of 3 people being in the loo at the same time is apparently wrong. It was, according to a tweet I posted in another thread, only 2 people. And there's no indication so far that they were in there at the same time, just that they kept going to the bathroom.

Good grief, haven't any of the other passengers ever experienced, er, intestinal problems?? Now we're going to be watched to see how often we have to pee?? If You See Something, Say Something!

I would have been on the ground laughing at those tubs "standing guard". what a joke. How much you want to be this one doesnt get charged with squat and it was nothing more then a shampoo bottle.

This is the second case in the past few weeks of our overlords detaining someone and destroying his bag out of "an abundance of paranoia caution." Oh, well. Didn't need that old suitcase anyway!

In this case, they quite possibly were right. If the reports are correct, he was trying to pass through the TSA security checkpoint and refused to allow his bag to be examined. Once your bags on the rollers into the x-ray machine, there's no way out. If they need to look at it, they can and they will.

Repeating the text quoted above, with highlighting:

That was a really dumb move unless his luggage was so filthy that only a high-pressure wash would do any good. I'm sure it's clean now.

Mike, given how thoroughly and regularly the TSA lies about passenger incidents (Yukari Miyamae, Andrea Abbott, Phil Mocek, Nadine Kay Hayes, Phil Mocek, Jean Weber's mother, Drew Mandy, on and on and on), I won't believe that the pax "refused" without further confirmation.

Not sure where to put this so I'll add it here. A good part of the rest of the world is getting tired of 9/11:

Combining news stories here -- TWO different instances yesterday of fighter jets scrambling (because of too many loo-lovers):

http://news.yahoo.com/no-charges-against-3-detained-detroit-airport-012643072.html
Two F-16s were dispatched to shadow the Airbus, said John Cornelio, spokesman for the North American Aerospace Defense Command, which is headquartered at Peterson Air Force Base in Colorado Springs.
Wintner says the Frontier flight crew radioed to request police help when the plane landed, prompting responders to greet the flight and question passengers after the aircraft taxied to a remote location at the airport.
Wintner said he didn't know the nature of the security issue.
Also Sunday, the 10th anniversary of the Sept. 11 attacks, NORAD sent two F-16s to escort a Los Angeles-to-New York American Airlines flight after three passengers made repeated trips to the bathroom, officials said. A law enforcement official said it wasn't thought to be terrorism. Flight 34 landed safely at New York's Kennedy Airport.
as it turns out, the gentlemen only wanted to get into the mile high club. with each other. saying we only wanted to love each other, there's so much hate in the world, is making love wrong.
