They claimed to have "cashed in substantial investments". In reality the they cleaned out the cemetery escrows. Actuarially sound, perhaps, but totally deceitful.

L.A. Times: Cardinal Mahony used cemetery money to pay sex abuse settlement

The Archdiocese of L.A. took $115 million from its cemeteries' maintenance fund in 2007, nearly depleting it. The move seems legal, but it was not announced, and relatives of the dead were not told.

meh, more disturbing than this were the recent release of correspondence between Mahoney and other officials in his diocese on how to hide certain known molesters in other states, to avoid them being charged and sued. When that came out two weeks ago, Mahoney was relieved of every duty and perk he had left.

So does he join the College of Cardinals to pick a new Pope?

I suspect that if he tried to attend the conclave, he'd be found floating face down in the Tiber. But no, he'd probably neither be invited nor allowed in.

I think he's over 80, which makes it a moot point.

Seems the world should welcome the Pope's retirement as much as anything:

"leadership" from the Vatican? That's not the nature of the relationship between one bishop (of Rome) and the others. It's not like a president and his cabinet. Roger had everything he needed to make a moral, ethical decision on all those matters. He was a big boy. All those bishops who tried to hide the truth and allow these predators to continue their dirty work had everything they needed to make the right call, and they did not. Hence the immense legal judgements against them. They went running to the Vatican to try to weasel out of their moral duty and the Vatican threw it back in their lap.

From McPaper: Britain's Cardinal Keith O'Brien to skip papal election

The United Kingdom's top cardinal, Keith O'Brien, is to step down as an archbishop, effective immediately, according to a statement published on the website of the Scottish Catholic news office ... His resignation came after news reports Monday of unspecified inappropriate behavior toward priests in the 1980s.

At least the priests presumably were of legal age, which is a few notches higher on the evolutionary ladder than raping children in L.A. ...

However, there is growing pressure from U.S. victims of clergy sexual abuse for Cardinal Roger Mahony, the retired Archbishop of Los Angeles, to withdraw from the conclave. More than 30,000 pages of priest personnel records released last month revealed that Mahony had been directly involved in covering up for priests who were known to have abused children and teens. Mahony has been writing on his personal blog that he plans to attend the conclave and to vote.

Can we still burn Mahoney at the stake, or is that just a tad too quaint?

I have 9.8 acres of timber on a lake with a lot of blowdown from a 4th of July storm last summer. Should be getting nice and dry by now. If you can show up with a truck and haul them to L.A., I'll supply all the faggots that are needed for a good roast.
