Fraudulent IDs

Yesterday I heard on WCBS, NYC, a story about either a NYC or NYState legislator asking to increase the penalties for producing fraudulent IDs, both passports and driver's licenses. Unfortunately, I only heard it once and can't find a link.

Anyhoo, (to quote Bob the Blogger), the legislator who is calling for the increased penalties said that the IDs for sale in NYC are so good that they can fool the TSA - not that that is saying much, but it just reinforces the stupidity of the ID checks.

I've been told that in a town near me one can purchase any kind of ID needed and it will pass even a close inspection. This is how illegals get Social Security Cards, drivers license, and other documents that may be needed.

An ID scrawled in crayon on a post-it note could fool TSA.

As for increasing penalties for producing fraudulent IDs...go ahead, I guess. I confess I really haven't been keeping up with the argument over it, though part of me is inclined to root for the forgers just to give the current set of authoritarians a hard time.

I'm not surprised that the IDs can fool TSA, or anyone else for that matter.

Several years ago at a hearing in CA, I heard an official from the Department of Motor Vehicles discussing this very topic. If thieves can get their hands on the paper, inks, and other apparatus to make a driver's license, it will look like the real thing. According to him it was all a matter of money and who the thieves could suborn at the DMV.

I'm sure it's more difficult now to make a forged ID (Real ID mandates and all), but my guess is that just drives up the cost.

As an aside, this is one of the reasons why privacy advocates (myself included) are against Real ID. All of the copies of documents that you need to submit to get a Real ID compliant ID will be held at the DMV -- your birth certificate, passport, bills (that prove you live where you say you live), etc.. Nothing like a one-stop-shop for identify theft!
