Just when you think dumb can't get any dumber ...

Press of Atlantic City: Mainland student charged with creating false public alarm with text about shooting

A 15-year-old student was arrested at Mainland Regional High School after a “false public alarm” caused by a text message was traced back to the teen, police said. “It was reported that it was circulating around school (via text message) that there was going to be a shooting at the school on Friday,” according to police. The investigation resulted in a 15-year-old female being arrested by the Linwood Police Department and charged with false public alarm, a third-degree crime, police said. The juvenile was released on the Juvenile Diversion Program.

Superintendent Tom Baruffi said students often don’t realize that something in writing, regardless of whether or not it is in the form of a text message or social media, can create a lot of chaos. The text message was sent to a few students at first, but networked out to more students. “We have no choice but to investigate and make sure it stops. Any message that cane be construed as a threat to students” will be investigated, he said.

Text messages are how kids communicate today -- get used to it. If two 15-year-olds were standing on a corner discussing the latest rumor, would you bust them for creating a "false public alarm"?

The crime here seems to have been defined & interpreted by authorities after the fact. Hopefully the girl & her parents will retain a decent attorney & take these morons to cleaners. The only way to end this nonsense is to bankrupt enough of these fools that the remaining fools take notice.

And to STOP PAYING for morons (including Super Baruffi) to read texts by 15-yr-olds and initiate police actions creating "chaos."
Morons: YOU are creating the "false public alarms" on OT wages.
Parents: stick a fork in your School District. It should be done.

You don't punish 15 year old girls with formal charges, unless the crime is premeditated and very serious. This is just typical kid stuff.

There are penalties for just being a kid. That's not allowed anymore. Not when the cops are tasing 8 year olds and handcuffing six year olds on the way to the police station for acting up in school.

They should have no problem finding a good one, they can just talk to the family of the kid arrested for maybe having chemicals that might somehow maybe form a bomb some day. They're right around the corner from one another...
