UK Telegraph: Man killed buried under 20-foot mound of pinto beans

That's a bummer as well as a beaner!

I know the headline makes it sound jokey, but this is actually a horrible -- and all too common -- industrial agriculture accident. I interviewed the parents of a 20-something guy who was suffocated in a similar accident in a grain silo. People have no idea how enormous these silos are. We're talking several stories high. Filled, whether grain or pinto beans, that adds up to thousands of pounds of stuff that can come down on your head. The safety record of this industry is abysmal.

Yup. Us emergency responders even have special classes available in the subject. I took one in the past, little has changed since.

Agriculture is a horribly dangerous industry. I've been recently researching worker's comp requirements in my state. Hey, it's easy money for providers. Anyhoo, companies in my state are required to carry work comp insurance with very, very few exceptions. Agriculture is one of them. I practice in a fairly rural area. The farmers I treat are among my patients in the worst shape. And these are people who are seeking regular treatment. I can't imagine what a true industrial injury would look like.

Of those that aren't immediately fatal, usually amputation, crush injury, impalement, and the occasional poisoning.
