Due to the hassles of air travel, Amtrak announces its highest ridership ever.

Hopefully they can keep TSA's tentacles off the rails, and use this influx to build more routes!

A number of reasons are given for the increase in traffic, but since TSA claims everyone loves their procedures, someone should probably ask them why air traffic is essentially flat while rail ridership is rising.

    According to the article:

I've always loved trains, always used them. But I'm so pessimistic, that I think the day will come when the abusive airport procedures are brought to the rails as well. Until then, I'm getting my money's worth. I just, in fact, canceled my BA credit card, on which I've racked up so many miles and with which, in the past, I've flown so many free upgrades. I held onto it thinking things would change; but I don't believe they will. I replaced it with an Amtrak card. So now I'll rack up rail miles.

There's already been talk of this coming from Sen. Schumer (D-Be Afraid, Be Very Afraid):

Yes, I remember when he said that. What a wanker.

I assume by the term "wanker" you meant "abundance of caution." I'd hate to think you'd be disrespectful in speaking of a U.S. senator!

Wanker is far too respectful for that man. Yet, at some point, words fail to convey...

Case in point - I just checked into availability this week for a short-notice if-necessary trip, as my Nonagenarian Grandfather is back in the Hospital... weekend trains are sold out, and midweek trains have limited if any availability, including sold out sleepers. Mind, this is early October, kids are in school, not high travel season at all/etc.

JoeBas, I hope your grandfather is able to be comfortable, in spite of his status, and that you are able to get to see him.

Based on the recent Gallup poll findings, the Senate and the House have a LOT of work to do to earn respect from the American public.

Here's what my last week looked like --

My sister trained up to see me -- a 24 hour journey that she could have flown in 2 hours (+airport hassle time)
When she was done with her visit she and I drove back down
My significant other is now on his way to me via train - he'll get here tomorrow morning.
When we're done being in this city, he and I will drive back home.

And - we're not alone. I'm hearing of more and more people traveling this way.
