This is a serious issue. The First Amendment gives people the right to gather news. I can think of nothing more important to the functioning of a democracy than having the citizenry free to record the public operations of the police.

Rodney King would not be a household name if such activities were illegal.

Unfortunately, this is going on all over the country. TUG members have posted similar stories in the past, or read about them elsewhere. It's a worsening problem. In Maryland a few months ago, a case was decided by the court in favor of the citizen, not the assaulting cop. But too many incidents have opposite -- and worse -- outcomes.

A crime was committed but cops somehow think that they are exceptions to the law. If you or I did something like that and those same cops caught us, there would be a citation and/or arrest and a public record.

Even if they're the blue-shirted secret police infesting our airports and train stations.

Uh, excuse me, where else was he supposed to do it? You get scratches on your butt out in the weeds.
