It never ends. And you're right, data retention comes up again and again and again..

Hawaii just floated a trial over the top data retention bill. They're now backing away from it. It is really over.the.top.

I don't know what it is about republicans and porn... During the Bush years it was all about the 2257 regulations that would have required everyone who has naked photos of themselves to provide info (online, no less!) that they're adults. And by 'provide info', I mean driver's licenses, social security numbers, home addresses, you know, things that can be used to steal your identity or cause you to be stalked.

Thankfully, that was all shelved.... at least for now.

Sunny, I sure wish I had known you back when I was posting at the Cogblog (Cogitamus). I took no end of (expletive deleted) from my co-bloggers and supposed allies for writing about the National Security State or anything about civil liberties. Then again, they would've given you just as much (expletive deleted), even worse probably, because one of the naysayers was a lawyer, and he didn't brook opposition. Then, once Obama got into office, everything was unicorns and rainbows. You really had to see the hypocrisy in stark black and white. It was stunning.

This will come up again as soon as we have another Republican president. Keep me on your list!

    I'm used to it. :)

I would have responded much earlier but our corporate 'net nanny thought this was a naughty thread; had to settle for sneaking a peak with my 'droid. What a disappointment.

Also in the news today: Ignorant Hawaiian legislators are proposing that the web sites you visit be retained for two years:

CNET (26 Jan 2012): Hawaii may keep track of all Web sites visited

Apparently none of these dimwits have heard of anonymizers. :D

Smith's bill has already passed committee. Here's a petition against it, just one of many on the web. I don't have a lot of hope. Congress is full of dimwitted tools.

So you just log on at Starbucks or Macs or or use an open router.

In a hotel a couple weekends ago, the free internet was down when we checked in, so I used the wireless signal (open router) from the Marriott next door.

Or do what I'm starting to do & use an offshore ISP for some web sites.

    Fascist retards ....
