Charlotte Douglas International Airport Joins More Than 400 Airports in Selecting AAAE's Transportation Security Clearinghouse

ALEXANDRIA, Va., July 10, 2014 /PRNewswire-iReach/ -- The American Association of Airport Executives (AAAE) Transportation Security Clearinghouse (Clearinghouse) has been selected by Charlotte Douglas International Airport to provide designated aviation channeling services. This contract award will allow Charlotte Douglas International Airport to benefit from the Clearinghouse's comprehensive solution for the secure and efficient channeling of applicant data for aviation worker background checks.

The Clearinghouse pioneered aviation channeling in the wake of the September 11th terrorist attacks to help airports comply with new background check requirements for aviation workers. Initially founded as a public-private partnership between the Clearinghouse and TSA, the agency has since authorized two alternate vendors to provide designated aviation channeling services to the nation's airports. The Clearinghouse is the only provider exclusively dedicated to airports both on a technical level as well as with federal advocacy efforts by leveraging the decades of AAAE security policy staff expertise.

"Secure and efficient badging operations are essential not only for mitigating the insider threat to our aviation system, but also for supporting and enhancing airport customer service and tenant relationships," said Carter Morris, Executive Vice President for AAAE Services.

TSA regulations require biographically based Security Threat Assessments (STA) and biometrically based Criminal History Records Checks (CHRC) be conducted for all badged airport workers. As Charlotte Douglas International Airport's selected designated aviation channeler, the Clearinghouse will be responsible for processing all biographic and biometric data for the badged population at the airport.

"We are pleased to be continuing our long standing partnership with the AAAE Clearinghouse," said Brent Cagle, CLT's Interim Airport Director. "AAAE and the Clearinghouse are uniquely positioned to understand both our short and long term needs in the badging office and beyond."

Jefferson County looks to hire part-time officers to provide security at Watertown International

Jefferson County is considering a plan to hire seven “special patrol officers” to provide security at the Watertown International Airport as part of an effort to reduce the strain on Sheriff’s Department deputies who fill the role. “If there’s an emergency on the other side of the county, it won’t affect our departures and takeoffs,” said Jefferson County Legislator Philip N. And it will allow the Sheriff’s Department to work more freely.” The officers would be responsible for providing security in airport buildings and grounds as part ...

Logan lost and found is full of surprises

Right now we're in the height of summer travel season, so you and your family might be heading to the airport soon. Every now and then, something you bring on your trip is left behind at Logan. As you might imagine the airport's lost and found area is full of items, and some of what is left behind might surprise you. “They come to the checkpoint they're going somewhere they’re in a rush and they leave full suitcases,” TSA spokesperson Lisa Farbstein said. It's not just suitcases, it’s everything you can think of and some things you wouldn’t even believe ...

South Carolina's airports land new TSA director

After the horrific terrorist attacks on the U.S. in 2001, Steve Corey followed a patriotic tug and joined the newly formed Transportation Security Administration. Now, he's the new TSA director for all airports in South Carolina except Hilton Head, which falls under the agency's Savannah jurisdiction. Based in Charleston, Corey, 60, takes over from Debbie Engel, who is still in the area but now works in TSA legal affairs. A former military police officer with the Army, Corey worked in logistics with a division of 3M out of San Diego and Minneapolis when he decided to serve his country in ...

Improvements Continue at Watertown International Airport

Since Jefferson County took over the Watertown International Airport in 2006, they've been making changes. The airport's sole airline service was switched and now, security is being altered there too. "We’re going to utilize the local workforce of retired police officers and corrections officers," said Jefferson County Legislator Phil Reed. Those officers will take the place of active sheriff's deputies. Leaders said that the Transportation Security Administration used to reimburse the county for the cost of four full-time deputies. That rate has since dropped while the sheriff's department has become increasingly short-staffed. "It should be pretty close to a wash ...

Twin Falls’ City Council gave the green light Monday evening to move forward with a $2.9 million update to the Magic Valley Regional Airport. The project entails expanding the size of the airport terminal, providing more room in the passenger holding area after passing through security and for baggage screening and sorting. The program allows approved travelers to leave their shoes, light outerwear and belt on, as well as keep laptops and compliant liquids in bags while going through security. The program is open to U.S. citizens and lawful permanent residents, who must go through a pre-enrollment process online at www.TSA.gov. Q-C airport security checks may change

Soon, Quad-City International Airport passengers could experience quicker and smoother security check-ins before boarding outbound flights. The Metropolitan Airport Authority board of directors approved a plan Tuesday to reconfigure its TSA, or Transportation Security Administration, checkpoint. Ultimately, that means the airport could become a fully functional pre-check facility, allowing low-risk travelers expedited, more efficient security screenings at participating U.S. airports. John Hursey, TSA's federal security director for downstate Illinois, said the TSA in the past three years, has made "an aggressive move to look at low-risk passengers ... with the objective of spending more time with high-risk passengers and the ...

They will also receive a known traveler number which will grant them access to TSA pre-check lanes at more than 100 participating airports. South Florida airport lines moving more quickly

Passengers are moving more quickly through security checkpoints at South Florida's three main airports, with most getting through in less than 10 minutes on average. Three years ago, they waited an average of 15 minutes or more to clear airport security, and in 2007 it occasionally took an hour or more. "It is going smoother," said Steve Landes of Boynton Beach, director of the South Florida Airline Commuters Association, a group of frequent fliers. Bomb-sniffing dogs added to OIA security

The Transportation Security Administration started using bomb-sniffing dogs at OIA back in December, during certain busy periods at airport security checkpoints. The dogs clear passengers while they wait in the line. Once the dog determines you're safe, chances are you'll get to walk through security without taking off your belt, shoes, or having to remove your laptop. It's the same type of faster treatment that passengers who sign up for the new TSA pre-check get each time they pass through security. TSA is using the dogs and pushing the pre-check because smaller crowds at checkpoints are safer, and make it ...

More RDU travelers take the TSA Pre-Check fast lane

If the airport security checkpoint agent sends you through the TSA Pre-Check lane, that means you get to leave your shoes on. And your jacket and belt. You’ll forgo the full-body scan, too. You’ll be told also that you may leave your laptop in your backpack – along with that quart-sized zipper bag that holds your regulation 3-ounce bottles of gels and liquids. These small favors are accorded to 5,600 North Carolinians who have paid $85 to enroll in the Transportation Security Administration’s Pre-Check expedited screening program. TSA demonstrates explosive-detecting dogs at Charleston airport

A black Labrador retriever bounds down rows of passenger seats in the terminal at Charleston International Airport, stopping at carry-on bags to take a sniff before moving on to the next piece of luggage or backpack. It moves past an airline check-in booth before homing in on an abandoned package between back-to-back rows of seats. The Lab, called Gginley after a 9/11 firefighter killed on duty, points his nose on the package and then sits. The package contained a detonation cord with gunpowder on it, and it was placed there by Transportation Security Administration officials out of the dog's sight ...

The dogs are trained to sit when they find an explosive device. "They are trained to do a non-aggressive response," said Kim Barnett, an explosive detection canine handler with the TSA, who also demonstrated how Brit, a German shepherd, could detect explosives. The dogs aren't new at Charleston International, and there hasn't been an explosive device found at the airport, said TSA spokesman Mark Howell.
