  2. I'm curious about this:

I wonder what the civil rights violation was here?

Hmmm, he is a thief and a liar for sure as he his trial proved. The civil rights issue may be something related to acting under the color of authority while stealing from a passenger.

I wouldn't be surprised. I've heard (somewhat apocryphally, granted) of more than one instance of an airport cop telling a TSA clerk to STFU if it didn't want to get arrested for impersonation when it spouted off about "I'm a federal officer!" One case had the airport cop explicitly saying "No you are not."

I'd think, though, that that would have been indicated as such on the report. "Impersonation of a law-enforcement officer" versus "civil rights violation."

Whatever the case, I'm very glad to actually see a court acknowledging civil-rights violations as something unacceptable.

The victim was VERY lucky that the surveillance videotape wasn't "disappeared" and that the cops actually agreed to review it.

How many times didn't they review the video and the TSA perp got away with it? LGA had over 1,000 theft complaints in 2010 and few if any of the TSA thieves were prosecuted. If it wasn't for the fact that the Port Authority police hate the TSA screeners for infringing on their territory the NYC airports would be virtually impassable while carrying anything of value. I fhope WABC runs a follow up on LGA thefts for 2011.
