My little girl is coming home for Christmas; have one quick question...

She's not so little (age 22), but she asked me if she could carry a glass lamp in her luggage that she purchased for her father's Christmas present.

This is a recently graduated college kid, still in the beans and rice phase of life, and can't afford to discard her father's gift *AT* the airport.

It's a fancy oil lamp, without a trace of oil, but lots and lots of glass.

She was hoping to pack it in the center of her carry-on luggage.

    Thanks in advance for help.

I would be hesitant to say that she will be able to take it with her. The fools of the TSA would probably question it's ability to be broken, and thus have a sharp object longer than a pocket knife blade.

If you've ever seen bags flying through the air as they're tossed off the conveyors onto chutes -- the huge circulating conveyors don't stop, the bags just get flipped of at the right point in time & often go tumbling down the chute ...

Well-padded & in the middle of a carryon is the safest place for something like that. There is a slight risk that one of the less careful "I know what I'm doing" clerks might damage it, but that's minimal, much less likely than if it's in checked baggage.

I agree fully(as a former airline employee), except for the fact that some TSA employee might disallow it, even without liquid in it. No way it would survive a checked bag unless in styrofoam and a box.

Yeah, I'd be hesitant. Any chance she could ship it - which isn't cheap, I know, but better that then risk it being taken from her or broken...... :(

I would advise against it, checked luggage is not at all gentle, and carry one, well chance it getting squashed in the overhead or being forced to gate check-which bring you back to the not-at-all-gentle luggage handling.

Ship it, to (expletive deleted) with the delay - it might have a better chance of arriving in one piece.

Have the kid send it insured by mail. It's not just the TSA, it's the wild behavior of the baggage handlers. They're really rough with things.

Well-packed in a UPS or FedEx box would be safer. In checked baggage, it can be stolen by the TSA or broken by the ramp rats. In carry-on, it can be stolen confiscated accepted as a voluntary surrender by the blue-shirted checkpoint roaches.

From the discription of the lamp, I seriously doubt it will go through the checkpoint. That leaves checked baggage. I agree with the others who are in favor of shipping it with insurance.

Then ship it. UPS 2nd day is usually reasonable.

IIRC, UPS also has $100 insurance included in even the cheapest Ground rate, and additional insurance is reasonable.

Milspec drop testing (MIL-STD-810F) for most electronics only requires a drop of 36". A computer monitor would probably get a 48" drop.

Over a 7' fence is out of spec. :D

FedEx treats its employees like (expletive deleted).

PS. My daughter packed this THICK GLASS oil lamp into her CARRY ON and it went through without a hitch. Can you believe it? I can not. It filled 50% of her bag, and they let it through.
