    Here's the statement from Napolitano:

“For more than four years I have had the privilege of serving President Obama and his Administration as the Secretary of Homeland Security. The opportunity to work with the dedicated men and women of the Department of Homeland Security, who serve on the frontlines of our nation’s efforts to protect our communities and families from harm, has been the highlight of my professional career. We have worked together to minimize threats of all kinds to the American public. The Department has improved the safety of travelers; implemented smart steps that make our immigration system more fair and focused while deploying record resources to protect our nation’s borders; worked with states to build resiliency and make our nation’s emergency and disaster response capabilities more robust; and partnered with the private sector to improve our cybersecurity. After four plus years of focusing on these challenges, I will be nominated as the next President of the University of California to play a role in educating our nation’s next generation of leaders. I thank President Obama for the chance to serve our nation during this important chapter in our history, and I know the Department of Homeland Security will continue to perform its important duties with the honor and focus that the American public expects.”

Holy crap. I think I'm slightly in denial as this hasn't fully hit me yet, but...this is great news.

Still, I feel sorry for the University of California system. Katehi, Spicuzza and Pike the Pig 2 years ago, now Nappy? Ugh, talk about getting (expletive deleted) on.

Given their track record, what "the American public expects" is a really low bar. I fully expect DHS to keep pulling the same stupid, inane, and unConstitutional stunts they pulled for the entirety of Napolitano's term.

No it's not. It would be great news if she were hung from the yardarms for her crimes. Or even if she were dismissed for incompetence.

Political appointees do their two/four/five years and leave--just part of the limited time cycle they have. She's just moving on, as the power elites do, from one cushy job where she her duties included oppressing US citizens to another cushy job where a main feature of it is to keep federal monies flowing into UC.

    Yay, that she's resigned.

Her landing at UC just makes me want to throw up. I graduated from UC, so did my s.o. Ugh. What a disaster.

I have but one question: What on earth is an abject moron like Nappy going to accomplist in an academic career?

Oh, never mind, it just hit me. The same thing she accomplished as governor and DHS secretary...absolutely nothing useful!!

    Agreed.
Ideally she would be replaced by NO ONE, and the monster of DHS reverts back to its component agencies (less one).:D

Obviously you'll have to send your degree back, which might have negative side-effects on your subsequent career. Anyone who makes such a sacrifice is welcome to join me as highly paid TUG blogger.

    Meanwhile, let's sing ...

If i were an alum, I would write to the trustees stating that I was no longer going to donate to the university because of their choice of a president. It would be good to spin up the alumni community and really hit them in the pocketbook.

We plan on doing just that. I'm not holding my breath that we'll get results, but at least I'll feel a bit better.

    (still disgusted)

Doesn't look like Nappy will be received well by some at UC.

Is she being appointed by Moonbeam or selected by a hiring committee?

If Moonbeam has any further political ambitions, this appointment seems like a great way to sink them. University chancellors traditionally are educator, albeit of the firmly-entrenched bureaucratic type, but educators nevertheless. Autocrats who's claim to fame is running an American-style Stasi just don't fit the mold.

That article is pretty hilarious. Some of funniest parts:

“Secretary Napolitano has the strength of character and an outsider’s mind that will well serve the students and faculty,” said Gov. Jerry Brown. “It will be exciting to work with her.”

Really? I think I have to agree with the Republican on this: "Napolitano’s views are entirely incompatible with the UC system’s history of civil liberties and the decision to appoint her is perplexing."

And House Minority Leader Nancy Pelosi said UC students “will benefit each and every day” from having her at the helm.

Is she serious? "Each and every day"????? Maybe Napolitano wants to bring in body scanners...

John McCain says "... I have never doubted her integrity, work ethic or commitment to our nation’s security"

And her respect for the rule of law?
