In the end, that will be the most effective lobby. Unfortunately between the economic situation & the alienated customer base, a few airlines might find themselves in bankruptcy before this is over.

 

I'd very much like to see several major airlines go out of business. I think that is the real answer. I think media pressure helps too.

It kind of makes me sick... at work, we leave Faux News on in our lobby all day (I swear I wish they'd change it to something else) and the ONLY thing on that channel for the last 14+ days has been that child murder trial in Florida or where ever it was--I haven't been paying attention. So while the whole world is enraptured with this what I presume is a sad case, the rest of the news is being totally ignored. It almost feels like a Wag the Dog kind of thing to me. Or, maybe people would rather be entertained (as gruesome and sad as it seems to be, it's entertainment on some level) so they don't have to address the fact that their rights are being completely erroded and so the news channels don't have to deal with a hard topic like a rogue government agency. I don't know, I really don't... it has me baffled to say the least.

 

If even if an airline goes under there are always others to fill the gaps.

The best thing that could happen to air travelers is to boycott.

 

I have a couple of friends who simply ruled out air travel was when the scanners went in.

I agree we'll see more and more people opting out of air travel as they become more personally and intimately acquainted with the "enhanced pat down".
A boon for cancer research, no doubt.

 

Faux News is a joke of a news agency. I have yet to see them take a stand either way on the TSA. I know Hannity and O'Reilly aren't all that fond of them, but that's not gonna help.

 

A lot of us happen to like Fox News. It's no accident that they're kicking butt with almost 75% more viewers than their closest competitor. Labeling them "Faux News" really only marginalizes the labeler.

Should a legit news agency of any type take a stand on a topic or just report the story?

Editorials, Opinion articles and such I think can take sides on a topic but a news reporter should only report facts as they are known.

 

In case you haven't figured it out, Fox News is two different things: A conventional newsfeed/network for their affiliates and an amalgation of talk shows (FNC) for our entertainment. If you don't like the talk shows, you are free to watch something else.

 

If your last was directed at me I agree fully. Fox has some hard news types and also the opinion shows which are not news.

I prefer Fox to the traditional networks and I can tell which segments are news or not news.

 

Never liked Fox News. I slant left/center, so their Right Wing propaganda rubs me wrong. Also can't stand O'Reilly, Hannity, etc.

As for Boggie's comment, no they should just report. None of the newsies do that these days. If I want the news, I watch the BBC.

 

I apologize for creating a little strife here; I did not intend to. I actually don't watch a lot of network news, and about the only TV news I ever see is in the lobby at work and it's always on Fox. Prior to this position with this relatively conservative bank, I worked for Microsoft where obviously the lobby viewing choice was MSNBC. One too far left, the other too far right. Just my humble opinion.

If this tells you anything about my TV viewing habits: My TV is off all day, at 10pm it gets fired up and is pretty much permanently stuck on Cartoon Network. LOL. God forbid if I miss Venture Brothers--what can I say? I'm a 44yo software engineer--geekdom at its finest. haha.

 

My TV died several years ago. Then I changed primary credit cards & forgot to tell DirectTV. Didn't realize that DirectTV had cut me off until they started billing me by mail. Never looked back.

These days if I actually want to see a program where people move around & talk on a screen (how quaint ), there's always YouTube. I only watch TV when I'm on a treadmill at the local community center or in a hotel on the road somewhere.

I, too, would "be happy to see the industry brought to its knees." That's the only thing that would force a change. Money talks, now and forever. Last year I kept urging an economic boycott (am certainly doing my part!), but as I've written before, most of my family and friends are clueless. Wallowing in their Panglossian morass.

The civil rights movement didn't succeed just by marches and demonstrations, powerful as they were. MLK and colleagues also organized economic boycotts. So did Gandhi. Economic boycotts work. But I'm afraid that's a long way off on the TSA/DHS front, if it ever even happens. Divide-and-Conquer is a game our overlords know how to play, and they're playing it with this "Trusted Traveler" program to a fare-thee-well.

I'm contributing my part, as well as convincing family and friends to avoid the TSA abuses. I no longer travel for work, the coming vacations for my wife and I, unfortunately, are destined to be close to home, so no international or even Az, Ca, or Wa trips. We have to be able to drive there in a reasonable time considering limited vacation days due to the new job I was forced to take to avoid travel. I've said it before, and I'll say it again, I am BEYOND mad at what the government and some of it's criminal employees have done to the nation I risked my life and swore to defend.

 

We are driving to St. Louis tomorrow for the 12th time since my wife's Nov. 1 grope. We are also driving to Denver in a week.

That's 26 round-trip tickets not booked on WN.

So as not to let the WN off the hook, I have been giving away our Southwest vouchers & award trips. So far eight people have benefited from free round-trip tickets, two more are booked.

 

I don't know if it means anything, but I am seeing many, many cars from out of state around where I live. Now, cars with PA, NY, CT, etc. are nothing unusual but the plates I am noticing are from from Texas, California, Washington State, etc., etc., etc. I'd love to have the opportunity ask the occupants of one of those cars if they chose to drive over flying.

 

I'm noticing the same thing. I've seen a lot of Ohio plates, which isn't particularly abnormal for Chicagoland, but I've seen Florida, California, Georgia, Pennsylvania and Louisiana plates in disproportionately large numbers lately. Might just be summer tourist-season stuff but I don't recall seeing so many in past summers.

This is hard for me to say since I have family who work for WN, but I'm glad to see so many people eschewing air travel. I can only hope it hurts the airlines enough for them to bring out the lobbyists and make life miserable for the TSA.

 

It's not like gas is $2/gallon either.
Someone should start collecting tourist-on-the-street videos answers to the question: "Why did you decide to drive?" Since driving is often well cheaper for families, maybe a follow-up question about how they feel about TSA screening.

 

The only way to effect a change of these abusive practices is at the ballot box and through a boycott of the airports using this technology. I personally will vote for any anti-TSA candidate over a TSA apologist regardless of party, race or any other label that can be assigned to them. If they are willing to defend my liberty and privacy, I'm sure I'll like them.

The next time a parent cringes upon seeing their child standing in a scanner being ogled by some perverse federal clerk, they will only have themselves to blame for enabling this abuse to continue. People must take strong and sustained action to dismantle this agency and stop this before it reaches their doorstep. Unfortunately too many are ignorant or too hedonistic to let minor issues like dignity and liberty get in the way of a good time.

Given its current constituency I really don't know if this country is really fit to survive the 21st century.
