Border agent charged with assault of migrant teen

Aldo Arteaga surrendered to the Santa Cruz County Sheriff's Office on Thursday after an internal affairs investigation by U.S. Customs and Border Protection, the border patrol's parent agency, was turned over to the sheriff's office. He has been placed on administrative leave. A Customs and Border Protection spokesman said he did not know the details about the Jan. 30 incident but said it involved a Mexican teenage boy who was being detained at the Nogales Border Patrol station.

Border Patrol agent charged with assaulting minor

According to a news release from U.S. Customs and Border Protection, the agency launched an internal investigation of the alleged assault in response to a report submitted by a supervisory agent at the station. The incident reportedly occurred on Jan. 30 ... County Attorney George Silva said the alleged victim was in a holding cell at the Nogales Station when someone noticed that he had a phone – a prohibited item for detainees. “This officer [Aldo F. Arteaga] walks in, takes the phone from the juvenile, then decides to punch him in the stomach,” Silva said. “And it’s videotaped.”
