Interesting, when did you get a good response from Mark Begich? A couple months before the Sharon Cissna incident he was on a local radio show being a major TSA apologist. I'm glad if he's come around on this issue, but he has demonstrated around here time and again that he will sell out if the price is right.

 

This is what I received from Begich on 6/29/11. Didn't seem bad to me compared to many others. Am I missing something or is this a case of "say what they want to hear"?

Thank you for contacting me regarding passenger screening measures employed at our nation's airports by the Transportation Security Administration (TSA).

I understand and share your concern about maintaining privacy and protecting civil liberties during the passenger screening process. The TSA has the challenging mission of protecting our transportation systems and the public from the ongoing threat of terrorism, while simultaneously safeguarding the ability of law-abiding Americans to travel freely. I am particularly disturbed by some of the stories I've heard regarding inappropriate passenger screenings from Alaskans including the recent incident at the Seattle-Tacoma International Airport involving State Representative Sharon Cissna.

I have spoken with TSA leadership to reiterate my displeasure with how the TSA is handling security screenings of some travelers, particularly those with prosthetic devices and others who have suffered major injury or illness. I asked the TSA to adjust their procedures to avoid further traumatizing travelers who have already faced traumatic situations in their lives through disease, illness or some other tragedy. The travelling public should not have to sacrifice their personal dignity to comply with TSA procedures.

At my request, member s o f TSA's senior leadership came to Alaska in early June to work with Alaska groups supporting victims of cancer, sexual assault, domestic violence and child abuse to help the TSA develop a more sensitive screening policy which respects the trauma these victims encounter. We had a productive dialogue , and I am hopeful the TSA will implement changes based on information gathered at the meeting.

The TSA's most important task is to make sure we do not let people who wish us harm onboard a passenger aircraft. But Congress must ensure the TSA does not violate the individual privacy rights of Americans while carrying out this mission. I will strive to make sure the TSA does this through a partnership with the traveling public. All screening measures should be risk-based and treat passengers with respect and dignity.

Well, that sounds pretty good. I suspect, after Sharon Cissna and an op-ed written by Shannyn Moore, a blogger crony of his who was a rape survivor and had a very bad reaction to a grope, he realized he was on the wrong side of the issue. He's not to be trusted overall, but he may be an ally now since his base is anti-TSA.
