TSA's spin has arleady started: He's just a baggage screening manager.

CBS News: Priest defrocked for child sex abuse now works for TSA, report says

CBS Philly reports that this week it observed Harkin working as a TSA checkpoint supervisor between airport terminals D and E, where thousands of people - including lots of kids - pass through every day.

The new lawsuit, filed in federal court against the Camden Diocese, accuses Harkins of sexually abusing an 11-year-old girl 10 to 15 times in 1980 and 1981, the station reported. Filed on behalf of the alleged victim, the suit alleges the abuse occurred while Harkins was a priest at Saint Anthony of Padua parish in Hammonton, N.J., with one alleged assaults occurring in Harkins' bedroom at the rectory.

"They should know who they're hiring," said Karen Polesir, a spokeswoman with the Survivors Network of those Abused by Priests (SNAP). She believes Harkins' TSA job is inappropriate.

"As the public, we are screened to our underwear getting on a plane, and yet they hire a man like that," she told the station.

A TSA official told CBS Philly Harkins' title is "Transportation Security Manager, Baggage," meaning he deals mostly with luggage, not passengers.
"Sure, that's his title," Polesir said. "That doesn't mean that's where he stays, that doesn't mean he doesn't fill other roles when necessary."

  3. That still gives him access to suitcases in which there are plenty of little girl panties to fondle and sniff.

He passed the TSA's rigourous background check because as a priest he abused young girls but as a TSA screener he would be dealing with young boys. That makes it "OK" to hire him.

Just can't make this stuff up. The good news is that Drudge picked up the story. Maybe it will get more press over the weekend.

    That's for sure.
Newark's Bimbo had his fake-ID credentials grandfathered-in. How on Earth does TSA explain this hiring? Amazing they actually try to downplay it with the 'baggage' assignment info.

Oh, excellent. This means Schakowsky (Schakoward, Schakraven, Schakrybaby) is up for reelection. Gotta get working again on that op-ed. Time to change your stance on TSA or lose your job, Jan.

My ruler this election will be "have they ever voted in favor of funding the TSA?" If yes, I vote for someone else.

A Catholic priest kicked out of the church over sex abuse allegations has found refuge with the TSA in Philadelphia.
The Philadelphia affiliate of CBS-TV has discovered that Thomas Harkins, formerly a priest working in South New Jersey, was removed by the Camden Diocese in 2002 because church officials found he had sexually abused two young girls. And now a third woman has come forward and filed a lawsuit against the Diocese for the same allegations.
It accuses Harkins of sexually abusing an 11-year-old girl 10 to 15 times in 1980 and 1981. The lawsuit, filed on behalf of the alleged victim, claims the abuse occurred while Harkins was a priest at Saint Anthony of Padua parish in Hammonton, NJ, with one assault even occurring in Harkins’ bedroom at the rectory.
Harkins was ordained in 1971. When the parents of the two victims contacted the church, they were told, in the first case, that they could “lose salvation,” and in the second, that they could “damage the church’s reputation.”
Harkins was supposedly sent away “for treatment.” The church paid the parents settlements totaling $195,000.
The church did not, however, report the abuse allegations to the police, as required by law.
Now Thomas Harkins has found another job: with the TSA at Philadelphia International Airport.
When the TV news crew tried to talk to him, Harkins “used his TSA badge to walk into a restricted area where our cameras could not follow.”
A TSA spokesperson said Harkins’s title is “Transportation Security Manager, Baggage.” That doesn’t mean, however, that he is restricted to handling baggage. He can still be called upon to do whatever the TSA requires on any given day. Including touching people.
The TSA constantly tells us it does thorough criminal background checks on its employees.
As we know, this isn’t the first time the TSA has had problems with child molestation, child porn, or sexual assault. The cases are well documented.
I have asked this question before, and I’ll ask it again: how are parents dealing with the possibility that their children may be molested as a condition of flying? And why are they willing to risk it?

I probably shouldn't jest on this because it'll be tomorrow's reality buuuut.... wait until we walk up to the checkpoint and find it's no longer blue shirts and gloves frisking us but orange jumpsuits. The brains (Ha!) at TSA suddenly decide to partner with prisons and form an outreach/rehab program to let the convicted inmates 'intern' as TSA "Officers" and TSA "Inspectors."

    That'll be the day.

Our pedophile priest turned pedosmurf is back in the news ....

    • TSA does not do a background check before they hire him
    • When they do the background check a year later, they learn of the abuse cases.
    • He's still working for them another nine years later.
    His annual salary is $75,600.

This organization of (expletive deleted), thieves and perverts has no discernible standards whatsoever.

Philadelphia Inquirer: TSA hired defrocked Camden priest without background check (Oct 1 2012)

About four months after being defrocked by the Diocese of Camden in 2002, Thomas Harkins had a new job as a security officer, including patting down passengers, with the Transportation Security Administration at Philadelphia International Airport.

The TSA hired the former priest before completing a background check, the agency recently confirmed.

According to a church document, the diocese revealed to the TSA in 2003 as part of the background check that Harkins had been removed from ministry because of allegations he had molested two grade-school girls. Harkins was never criminally prosecuted, but the diocese settled civil lawsuits for $195,000.

The TSA took no action as a result of the disclosure.

"An allegation alone does not warrant dismissal or automatically disqualify applicants from employment with the TSA," spokeswoman Ann Davis said.

    The mouthpiece continues ...

"The Privacy Act of 1974 prohibits TSA from disclosing information from our employees' job applications and employment records," Davis said. "However, all TSA employees undergo comprehensive background checks, which include criminal history."

It's a good article, lots of info on Harkin's background.

Doesn't he realize how stupid he sounds when they have a known pedophile working for them? Not considering that this gets dredged up in a week that a screener gets nabbed for theft and two guns get through security. These spokespeople must be on drugs, there's no other rational explanation.

In no way am I supporting the TSA, but apparently these charges were all kept in-house by the church so the police had no knowledge of them.

However, once the TSA was informed by the church, he should have been let go immediately.
