They didn't do the background checks until a year later. Background check routinely ask former employers about problems.

Granted that the Diocese stifled it, but TSA isn't completely off the hook here.

"An allegation alone does not warrant dismissal or automatically disqualify applicants from employment with the TSA,"

But a vague, baseless, illogical, and random suspicion on any and all travelers warrants us being treated like a criminal by a bunch of blue gloss with poor ethics and training excericing misguided and unconstitutional practices?!!

  3. I would say being defrocked is more than just an allegation.

  4. I've seen a couple stories that say he is doing patdowns. In earlier stories, TSA claimed he was mostly in the baggage area. Either more shoddy reporting, or TSA was not honest about his position.

TSA and honesty are two words that can't be used in the same sentence.

I don't know about applying for a federal position but don't the application forms ask why a person left their last job? I can't believe that TSA could not find reason to fire the TSA PedophilePriest if they wanted to. Something is not adding up about TSA's efforts to keep this person.

If he's doing pat downs, he should be visible from landslide. Any intrepid videographers live close to the airport?

Actually, he was exposed by the local CBS affiliate. I never heard a response from Bloghdad Bob.

    International coverage ...

UK Daily Mail: Former priest hired by TSA to pat down passengers, three months after church kicked him out for 'molesting young girls'

First he was fired for allegedly groping young girls, then hired to frisk them at an airport. A disgraced former priest, defrocked from his New Jersey diocese over allegations of molestation in 2002, was three months later given a job as a TSA officer, it has been revealed. Thomas Harkins was employed in a role where his duties would include doing pat downs on children, according to local news, after the agency failed to do a thorough background check and offered him a position at Philadelphia International Airport.

Also picked up by the Son-of-Pravda News Service ...

RT: TSA hires a priest excluded from clergy for child molestation

In 2002, Thomas Harkins was permanently removed by the Catholic Church after 20-plus years of allegations that the former clergyman had molested children at parishes across the East Coast. Today, he’s your friendly TSA agent.

Despite being excommunicated and forced to pay around $195,000 to settle civil lawsuit relating to a barrage of sex-crime charges in the greater Philadelphia area, Harkins, now 65, didn’t have a problem finding a new job after being booted from the Catholic Church in 2002. Shortly after, he was hired by the Transportation Security Administration and assigned to a position that required him to routinely pat-down young children and subject them to the evasive, hands-on body scans that have become a hallmark of post-9/11 America.

The Church reached out to the TSA and told the federal agency of Harkins’ sordid pass — which includes several allegations that suggest the priest molested young girls as early as 1979. He was transferred in 2000 to a prison to serve as a chaplain there and, two years later, permanently removed from the Catholic community.

As a TSA agent, Harkins touched passengers — children and adults, alike — until 2004. At that point, the Philadelphia Inquirer has learned, he was promoted to a supervising provision where he remains today, overseeing checked baggage. Now he maintains a quiet life as a federal security staffer, despite once looking at a life in jail for a series of sex crimes.

He was exposed about three months ago by CBS# Philadelphia. Nice to see the reprise of this story. I've been using it in comments for months. It usually goes like this:

The pervert is a TSM so I hope that would put him out of the rotation for feeling up little kids.

How can anyone look at any TSA employee with any degree of trust when we all know that TSA has this guy on the payroll.
