TSA's Instagram Is Pretty Clever and Also Reminds Us How Insane People Actually Are

Airport security is often the bane of our existence. We wait in line, have to remove ridiculous amounts of clothing and pack our liquids into little quart-sized bags. However, TSA does keep us safe and they're total pros at catching inanimate objects that are actually weapons (according to their Instagram page). The TSA's page posts reminders of what is and isn't acceptable to take with you while you fly, while also throwing some shade at some apparently stupid people who attempt to board planes with this kind of stuff in their possession. And upon reviewing their Instagram feed, we have ...

That TSA Instagram Page Is Jam-Packed With Items They've Confiscated From You — PHOTOS

The next time you go on vacation and stock up on questionable souvenirs, just check it. If you don’t, not only will your new samurai sword be confiscated, but your confiscated stuff might end up on TSA’s Instagram. The Transportation Security Administration has joined the photo-sharing craze — not to share metal detector selfies or snaps of their lo mein from Wok & Roll, but to remind us why these security checks are crucial. The bizarre and terrifying items they’ve documented so far are enough to make you OK with an extra pat-down or two. Among the most alarming items ...

Instagram of US airport security chiefs: Lipstick knives and IED training kits among items seized

Having your cabin baggage dissected and prodded by bureaucrats in latex gloves is not the most entertaining way to spend five minutes in an airport, but it’s a necessity that has been given increased attention following an announcement that security checks in the UK are to be stepped up. Thankfully, the US Transportation Security Administration (TSA) is on hand to remind us why we slog it through the scanners, with a frightfully revealing Instagram feed showing the agency’s on-the-job finds. The TSA’s dramatic pictures show the prohibited weapons uncovered by guards in the last few months including a batarang – ...

The TSA's Instagram Feed Is Hilarious and Informative

The Transportation Security Agency has long been maligned for making us take off our shoes and go through a metal detector fifteen times before someone is finally happy. This Instagram won't make up for all that, but it's probably the most amusing/informative thing you will see today. Did you know that when the TSA confiscates something from you they can then post photos online? Well, if you've ever wondered whether anyone at the TSA does ANYTHING, you should stroll right over to their feed and see the WTF items people tried to bring on board. In the cheerful and helpful ...

Some People Don't Know Flying With Grenades Isn't OK. Inside The TSA's Instagram.

Conventional (OK, Mafioso) wisdom tells us to leave the gun, take the cannoli. Some airline passengers missed the message. The Transportation Security Administration has an unreal collection of contraband officials confiscated from passengers at security checkpoints. We understand if you forgot to throw out your water bottle -- but who think it's OK to take a knife/brass knuckles combo on a plane?! The TSA's Instagram account is a gold mine of confiscated item photos. It's not just the photos; the blue-shirted TSA officers aren't known for their sense of humor, but the officials running this Instagram clearly have fun in ...

12 Weird Things TSA Has Confiscated from Your Carry-On Bags

People are weird. So, naturally, try to bring weird things on planes. And thanks to the power of Instagram, the TSA can show us exactly what kind of bizarre stuff it confiscates from people attempting to board airplane. It’s easy to hate on the TSA, but if this is the kind of stuff they are protecting us from, I will never complain about airport security. Okay, maybe a little. ... While this person may consider bear repellant to be a bear necessity, TSA clearly did not agree. ... Isn’t sneaking stuff around, like, the first rule of being a ninja? ...

    The TSA’s Insane Instagram Feed

The knife that looks like a gun, the 60mm mortar, the suitcase filled with marijuana—the TSA’s Instagram feed is an eye-popping compendium of heinous objects found in passengers’ luggage. If you’re a nervous flier, read no further. If you’re fairly confident you’ll be willing and able to board a plane again after discovering how absolutely barking mad your seatmates are, continue on. Every once in a while, reports of the contraband passengers attempt to smuggle past the Transportation Security Administration manage to infest the Internet almost as thoroughly as their 3D scanners invade your being. TSA airport inspectors have found ...

#SocialSkim: What Gets Shared, Word Crimes, TSA on Instagram, Write Like a Spy, More!

Welcome to Instagram, TSA. The TSA, among the most derided government bodies around, has been on Instagram since last year. Thanks to The Daily Beast, people have begun to notice—and it's fascinating. Each photo yields insight on how the TSA works, and on the (crazy!) things they find when sifting through luggage and shoes. (More than one ninja star... and a lot of knives-disguised-as-other-stuff.) The captions are funny and informative; crucially, they humanize an entity that we often think of with ire. (You'll want to thank them when you see all the grenades.)

Scary things stopped by the TSA

10 News went behind the scenes Friday with the TSA at Tampa International Airport to see some of the dangerous things passengers have tried to bring on planes. Security in the air is the TSA's business, and it's on the minds of people around the world after Malaysia Airlines flight 17 was shot down over Ukraine. Pointing out brass knuckles, throwing stars, a hatchet, and clubs, you'd think Lee Kair is the curator of some medieval weapons museum, not the head of the TSA for Tampa Bay. Kair displayed some of the unbelievable things people have tried to carry onto ...

Concealed Carry-On: Every Week, Passengers Bring Guns, Bombs, and Knives Through Airport Security Checkpoints -- Even in San Francisco

Thirty-five loaded firearms. Seventy-four credit card knives. Two inert grenades. One grenade-shaped vaping device. One live smoke bomb. A dagger tucked into the handle of a hairbrush. Two knives concealed in combs. One knife secreted in the bottom of a shoe. One 8-ounce spray can of bear repellent. All were found and confiscated by airport security officers across the country during Fourth of July weekend and the week that followed. Perhaps surprisingly, that's a fairly routine catch for Transportation Security Administration screeners, who publish weekly reports on the lurid, exotic, and often deadly weapons they uncover while searching the bags ...

What Was Your Worst Beauty-Related TSA Experience?

If we're just judging by their Instagram account, then the TSA folks are awesome—they confiscate terrifying knife and gun collections on the regular, smile and laugh with passengers, and love cute dogs. If we're going off our personal experiences at airport security checkpoints, they're not quite so sweet. Recently Allure contributing editor Meirav Devash made it through the metal detector with no problem, but her hair didn't get off so easily: "The TSA lady squished my topknot when she gave it the two-handed, gloved squeeze to make sure I wasn't smuggling weapons in there." And she's hardly the only one ...

I know this is going to garner some directed commentary, but the Instagram account has done more communicating about items people may not think of, or that they were unaware are prohibited. The 29 and under crowd are actually talking about some of the cool items they have that they would never consider *not* taking through a checkpoint. They are also raising awareness with some family members, I have actually had college kids asking about the "crazy" things they have seen on Instagram. I don't think I could be much happier with the TSA Instagram account right now (unless I actually had the job of operating it!).
