Acree wants to return to the failed system in which low-paid, poorly trained screeners were set up by private security contractors more focused on maximizing profits than protecting the American people from the failed system in which low-paid, poorly trained screeners were set up by a government more focused on maximizing fear and obedience in its subjects than protecting the rights of the American people.

I'll take the lesser evil of profit-driven private security. At least you can sue them.

And depending on the sensitivity of local airport management to issues that arise, they can be easier to hold accountable, i.e. discipline, arrest, jail, fire.

He's just the clerks' union boss trying to protect his turf. He could give a gnat's eyelash about airport security.

I've seen comments to this effect at other places over time. I don't know if it's correct, but am assuming some of you here do. Did the airlines in fact ever run their own security? Can someone please respond to this guy and let us know when you do so we can read it:

At larger airports it would be a cooperative effort but the cost was fully born by the airlines. That is why when TSA was created it was the airlines who were assessed to continue paying for security at their pre-TSA levels of expenditures.
