Last time I flew out of Sheremetevo I was felt up rather thoroughly and ran through the radiation machine as was everyone else. No opting out of anything for anybody. When I arrived there I was scanned with a thermal camera (infrared) for H1N1 but hear they quit this. Since thermal is completely passive I really didn't have a problem BUT if you happened to be running a little warm they would put you in quarantine, shut down the terminal and spray disinfectant everywhere and make everyone ride a bus to the plane. Glad they quit this but they still have the radiation scanners and the invasive pat downs. My wife just went there and I stayed since I'm not interested in going through this again but will give an update after she returns next month.

I believe they have MMWs, not Backscatter.. Right?

Yes, I believe you are right since they use the machine that whirls around you but I have heard otherwise from the locals. Hard for me to say exactly. My wife recently went and said that in the new terminal E at Shereymetevo they don't have the scanners there. I can't say if they plan to at a later date but as of August 16th they do not.

I've got friends in Moscow right now, so I'll ask them to let me know what security is like when they're on the way back to the US.

Be sure to get which airport and terminal. I'll probably be going again after they get the mess here bearable. I used to go 2-6 times a year but havent been in 2 years since everyone got ridiculous in the airports. I've been humiliated enough.
