    Then pack up & leave?

    Seriously -- either people do something, or they just roll over and take it.

    I'm in a very heated facebook discussion with some "friends" of a friend about this very stuff. She posted that she didn't want to relive the horrors of 9/11! all weekend and people jumped all over her, "We should never forget!" said one, another said "We were attacked! How can you say that?!!?!?" So I posted the excellent essay I've discussed here about forgetting horrific events so that we can better honor them. I was accused of telling people it was like the Holocaust never happened, and that slavery was acceptable. I was told that people should remember to infinite detail what happened so it NEVER!HAPPENED!AGAIN! 9/11!.

    So I've posted this story with the remarks that if we continue to mire ourselves in this hysteria, this is what happens. That we have obviously forgotten the lessons of the Holocaust and that slavery is still alive and well. It'll be interesting to see the responses.

    That theory is (expletive deleted).

    The problem is that it takes TIME to follow through with habeas corpus. Time to contact/retain an attorney, time to file, time for the court to rule. During all that time, you might still be in the goon's clutches.

    I'd like to start a simple forum (just 3 sub-forums -- Stasi, DHS, Action) to help people connect the dots.

    All of the good domain names, e.g. stasi.xxx and mfs.xxx (Ministerium für Staatsicherheit = Stasi) are taken. Please send suggestions by PM (Conversation). It want the suggestions out of sight so nobody preempts anything by grabbing the names.

    This frustration has been building up in me for a while. Right now I'm just mad. :mad:

    It's time for the "get even" step. :D

    Re habeas corpus, this is the article I was remembering (or mis-remembering, as the case may be):

    Obama and habeas corpus -- then and now

    Gist of it is that Obama has continued the practice under Bush of denying habeas corpus to "enemy combatants" and "detainees." Mike is correct that this suspension of h.c. doesn't apply to American citizens. I would only contend that all the practices visited upon The Other sooner or later come back to be visited on Us.

    Somebody (Phoebe?) said she already sent it. Nicholas Kristof has also FB'd it. I sent it to Glenn Greenwald (of course, he's on Brazil time, so I have no idea when he'll see it). Hundreds if not thousands of people are re-posting, emailing, blogging, tweeting it.

    Thanks for the link, I'll add it to my reading queue. I already ordered (used, it's one expensive book) Francis Boyle's Protesting Power: War, Resistance, and Law earlier today.

    Much more of this & I could return to my old, angry McGovernite 'tude.

  15. I liked your post, CP. Only thing is I disagree with is that it couldn't happen to three white people. With all the hype about domestic extremism, I'm of the opinion that we're moving in a direction where this could happen to anybody.

    Indeed. And it will. But for now, the swarthy are still the ones being most singled out.

    Well, there wasn't a lot of time, I was so ticked off, I'd just written about the Vance Gilbert triplane book thing, and I wasn't thinking of subtle issues.

    I think one of the sickest things that comes out of all of this 9/11! hysteria is that it's not that people think the grope downs and strip searches and tattle tales are wrong. It's that some people seem to think (reading comments to certain news stories, sorry can't think of any right now) "Hey, as long as we apply it to everybody, it's OK!"

    When the Nazis came for the communists,
    I remained silent;
    I was not a communist.

    When they locked up the social democrats,
    I remained silent;
    I was not a social democrat.

    When they came for the trade unionists,
    I did not speak out;
    I was not a trade unionist.

    When they came for the Jews,
    I remained silent;
    I wasn't a Jew.

    When they came for me,
    there was no one left to speak out.

    TSO's reign of error doesn't exist in a vacuum -- it is this poisonous atmosphere of fear and hatred that permits it to survive.

    I actually have that in writing from a newspaper reporter. You'd better believe I'm hanging onto it.

    I periodically change the signature I append to my emails -- for a while there I was using:
    Meh, Nuremberg Schmuremberg.
    Meh, Martin Niemöller.
    The know-nothings still didn't get it.
