Suggestion: Consolodate Forums

A slow forum is a sad thing indeed. As this is a fairly new board with a small but active membership, I think we might benefit from having some of the smaller, slower forums consolodated together where appropriate, in order to create fewer, larger, more vibrant forums full of awesome discussions. As the board grows, the forums can, of course, always be split again!

me too... I find all the super organization cumbersome. thank goodness, i discovered the "what's new" button. it takes a loong time with this slow computer to pore through all the forums here to discover where all the new posts are. very easy to overlook some threads near the bottom of the table of contents. it might be better if the first page could be read w/o the need to scroll down?

just a simple simian i am...

Quick suggestions as to how it might be done:

    - Combine the Rails/Highways/Waterways into one
    - Combine the three customs/immigrations into one
    - Combine Questions/Comments and Moderation
    - Somehow make the 6 TSA forums into maybe 2

This would reduce our forum count by 9 without, in my opinion, taking away from the user experience. Five of those forums presently have fewer than 10 threads.

Hmmm - not my decision to make but I don't disagree.

Also, expand beyond TSA in terms of areas of concern, the Detroit and other incidents show a much broader threat to freedom, as well as mismanaged security.

Which ones into which 2? Specific suggestions tend to get my attention much more than the vague ones.

Videos I want/need to keep isolated for technical reasons, so it might be which ones into which 3.

That thread was misplaced (should have been in "Other aviation incidents") but was so active I haven't wanted to move it yet.

Specific suggestions for (esp. forum names & categories) would be helpful.

TUG actually was intended to cover travel safety & security, and there are several forums for non-TSA stuff. However, There's no denying that most participants are mostly interested in TSA.

XF provides a couple very effective ways to find new posts.

I find it more effective to scroll down the main forum, open each forum w/ a new forum icon into its own tab, and then open each thread w/ a new posts icon into its own tab. When you do it this way at least once every 30 days, you will see only those responses that you have not already read. But then I might be the only one here crazy enough to try to read every post.

Consolidating the forum list would still expedite this.

The real beneficiary of such a consolidation (given that I've been pretty much apathetic about it up to this point) would be the unregistered "guests", the poor guys who see our ads and actually pay our bills. XF doesn't (can't) track what they've already seen, so depending on their preferred approach to forum reading, a consolidated forum list might really make it easier for them.

Please keep the suggestions coming -- specific is better. I'll ponder them over the weekend. The current scheme was mostly hashed out in week 1 & tweaked a couple times since them.

One thing to keep in mind is that some of these forums have subforums that still need to make sense in their new homes. vB allows 3rd-level forums to be displayed as a list of links below a 2nd-level forum. XF doesn't offer that option, so they all disappear into one drop-down box.

There's a ton of ways you could combine them. Here's one idea

TSA At the Airport -- Checkpoint Abuses (beyond the abuse mandated by the SOP), Theft, Crime, Practical Travel Questions
TSA Behind the Scenes -- Policy Debate, Politics, Law

I would get rid of subforums altogether, except perhaps make the TSA Videos forum a subforum of TSA At the Airport. Counting subforums, we have 36 total forums here. I know that for me personally, I've never kept track of more than 3 forums on any board (other than for purposes of moderation), no matter how big or important the board was to me. People sort of consider one forum their "home" and stick to it.

...and I know as a business owner that you always want to build as big as you can, so it probably is against your instinct to make smaller. But, the party at the really big venue that's 20% full is always thought of as lame, while the really small venue that has a line out the door is the cool place to be. :)

Won't be getting rid of subforums -- they'll all continue to exist. Many aren't really forums but "pages" of info, and there is no other way to fit them into the hierarchy (unless you'd like to see them as top-level forums :D).

No worries... I think you could find a home for the subforums within the 2 suggested TSA forums. ...and make the videos forum a new subforum! :)

OK, where did Politics go? It would be nice to have an announcement with a re-map.
Now that I've cleared my cache, registry, etc maybe I'll be able to post again (which I've not been able to), but I need a map to the forum.:(

Most of what you're interested in is here:

Aviation Passenger Security in the USA

Videos & Lawsuits will be merged into the above forum in a month or two. There are some technical considerations in keeping them separate in the interim.

And I would like to note that this was done w/o shutting the place down for a week and leaving 5 gazillion redirects behind. :D

just took ages to find the airframe incidents posts - not a very intuitive consolidation IMO.

Not to mention the site is taking forever to load pages and frequently timing out - and no, it is not happening on other sites.

I'm lost. I can't find threads I used to follow. I can't remember what their old names are, and I don't know where they are now. I wish I had known this reorganization was coming.

Have I mentioned that other than socks and undies, I'm not too keen on change?

I'll adjust, but please don't do this very often.

Grrr...You are so darned lucky I can't short your sheets, hide your keys or replace your favorite shampoo with Nair.

Gadfly! Next time you feel like a bit of chaos, go cozy up to Blogger Bob and give him a few of your "helpful" ideas.

You need to speak up next time. I ignored the subject the first time Jon broached it. This time around several people seconded the motion, nobody objected. One thing I've learned about this crowd in 3.5 months is that 4 ayes and 0 nayes is quite a turnout on administrative matters.

At this point I also have a good idea how large TUG is likely to grow eventually, and most of the merged fora still wouldn't be that busy. An argument could have been made to keep TSA/Checkpoints & TSA./Policies separate based on activity, but for the rest merger was inevitable.

XF 1.1 is rumored to support prefix tags, so we will be doing some organization within a forum by assigning prefixes (e.g. name of country, "lawsuit", "video", ...) to assist in finding things. XF 1.1 is supposed to be released at the end of October.

For the record, these were the consolidations:

Policies & Announcements <--- Posting Policies (policies are the stickies)
    Policies & Announcements <--- Announcements

Aviation Passenger Security in the USA <--- TSA checkpoint discussions
Aviation Passenger Security in the USA <--- TSA Baggage Screening
Aviation Passenger Security in the USA <--- TSA - Policies, Politics & Political Action
Aviation Passenger Security in the USA <--- TSA - Criminal Activity

Aviation Passenger Security in Other Countries <--- CATSA - Passenger & Luggage Screening in Canada
Aviation Passenger Security in Other Countries <--- Passenger & Luggage Screening in Other Countries

Other Aspects of Aviation Security <--- Airframe Incidents & Maintenance
Other Aspects of Aviation Security <--- Other Aviation Incidents (People Issues)

Railways, Highways, Waterways <--- On the Railways
Railways, Highways, Waterways <--- On the Highways
Railways, Highways, Waterways <--- On the Waterways
Railways, Highways, Waterways <--- Personal Safety

    Customs & Immigration <--- U.S. Customs & Immigration
    Customs & Immigration <--- Canada
Customs & Immigration <--- Other Countries
