Just completed a round-trip long distance trip 36 hours from Slidell to Raleigh, including a train change in the "Belly of the Beast" (Washington Union Station), and 36 hours back, for a college football/college reunion trip.

At no time, not once, was I even remotely in danger of:

    1) Having to present ID to move about my own damned country.
    2) Being irradiated to move about my own damned country.
    3) Having my testes inspected to move about my own damned country (or inspected at all, unfortunately, the wife wasn't along this trip ;) )
    4) Having my drink purchased "Trainside" inspected by magic strips.
    5) Having my drinks which I brought on the train (Baileys to "Irish up" the coffee a little) inspected by magic strips.
    6) Being bothered in ANY WAY by ANY authority figure, whatsoever, with the exception of the conductor once asking me "You didn't just get on, did you?" while sitting in the dining car.

I can't, for the LIFE of me, figure out why anyone in their right mind would set foot in an airport in this day and age for non-essential travel. If we would just starve the beast, this would all go away...

Well, I travel to the Miami area occassionaly. Air including two hour early pre-flight check in is about 5 hours.

Train from Dallas area to near Miami is a couple of days, Dallas to Chicago to Washington DC then down the coast to Florida. And Expensive!

Auto, my choice for our last trip earlier this year, is two hard days of driving and one night on the road each way.

FAct of the matter is that air travel is often less expensive and time saving. I have avoided air travel even while I would prefer to go by air.

    Yes, but soul destroying.

If someone said "Great news! I can get you anywhere you want to go, free, and nearly instantaneously! All I have to do is put you in a blender and liquify you for transport!"... pass.

That's because Amtrak & some bozo politicians refuse to restore rail service (Sunset Limited) east of Louisiana post-Katrina:

Southern mayors to meet about restoring coastal train service

But I did go by auto from Dallas to Miami last trup. I took the less soul destroying means of transportation.

Maybe I should give a TSA Fluffer a crack at the man tools.

Look, the fact of the matter is it would have been much easier and cheaper and faster for me to just fly to RDU, rather than drive to Slidell for 5 hours, spend the night, ride a train for 25 hours, spend 6 hours wandering DC waiting for the next train, riding another train for 6 hours, and then reversing the whole process to get back, for a 36 hour visit and a football game.

But dammit, some things aren't worth sacrificing for easy, cheap or fast.
