My 9 NJ: 3 aircraft hit with lasers near Newark airport (Aug 16 2013)

The FAA says two commercial airliners on approach to New Jersey's Newark Liberty International Airport were illuminated by lasers. A privately operated helicopter was also targeted during the same period, between 9:20 and 10 p.m. Thursday.

The FAA says the helicopter was illuminated with a green and white laser at 1,600 feet, about 10 miles south of Newark.

About a half hour later, a Boeing 737 and an Embraer 135 were targeted with a green laser on final approach to the airport. They were at an altitude of 3,000 feet, one mile east of Teterboro Airport.

    I wonder about these reports.

I have a green laser pointer used to point out stars. I am leery of using it since someone somewhere could accuse me of spoting airplanes. I'm over the flight path of aircraft departing DFW to the east but they are at least 10K feet if not higher by the time they get to my area.

In the service we started having to wear laser protection googles when doing certain flights. Attempts to blind flight crews were known to happen from time to time and this was well out to sea, not land based lasers.

A "white laser?" Interesting. Never seen one of those outside a lab, since they're generally three lasers (red, green, blue) combined.

RB - would depend on the angle, and if it was a direct hit on the aircraft. This has become a major problem as these idiots on the ground are lighting up all sorts of aircraft including air medical.

What is needed is to stiffen the penalties from the slap on the wrist now (community service or 5-30 days in jail) to serious punishment as all intensive purposes its attempted murder and stiffer penalties so these idiots get the point and spend some time in "federal pound them in the (expletive deleted) prison" for a wake up call.
