Saw this earlier on Twitter - just waited for it to be confirmed

On departing the RNC in Tampa yesterday, Ron Paul, his wife and grand-daughter were subjected to harassment by the TSA at a small airport in Clearwater, Florida.
Eight TSA goons told the Paul entourage they would need to be screened before they would be allowed to leave because Mitt Romney might be nearby.
The insinuation was obvious — Paul and his family pose a threat to the GOP presidential candidate.
After a protracted examination of Ron Paul’s credentials, the agents demanded they be allowed to check the airplane for explosives.
The incident ended after Ron Paul’s wife, Carol, who has a pacemaker, refused to be screened by the TSA and an aide started taking video.

The only airline that serves this airport is Allegiant; their ticket counter is open only two hours daily.

TSA probably does some minimal legitimate presences at this airport, but it's highly unlikely that their goons are qualified to screen aircraft for much of anything, and general aviation aircraft are out of their purview anyway.

Never mind that the best "explosive" on a jet is full fuel tanks and a high-speed impact. Were the retards going to siphon the tanks as a safety measure?

TSA workers may be qualified to screen people and baggage but I doubt they have had any training on searching airplanes. They are not qualified to open, move, or inspect aircraft unless they hold an A&P issued by the FAA.

Perhaps the Paul aircraft was private.

  4. I would think allowing TSA to screen his aircraft would seriously compromise Ron Paul's own security. Remember when some rogue screeners were checking an airplane for who knows what, under who knows what authority, and stepped on a pitot tube or something? (Help me, details fuzzy.)

Yes, a pitot tube, basically a gauge that calculates velocity by measuring air flow. At high altitudes jets have a narrow envelope in which they can fly. Properly functioning pitot tubes are essential to staying within that envelope.

The Air France crash over the South Atlantic happened when the copilots reacted incorrectly to a stall subsequent to a pitot-tube failure.

So did they enhancely screen Mitt when he flies?

  7. Was it in fact a pitot tube or something else, like one of those step-looking things on a plane that says "NOT A STEP!" and he stepped there? I just can't remember, but I know a screener stepped somewhere anybody with minimal knowledge of an aircraft would no never to step.

    It was a pitot tube.

I read this last night on Infowars but didn't post it, 'cause Infowars is hardly a preferred source. It seems credible, so I'm glad it's here.

I'm glad Mrs. Paul declined to be screened. I agree that having the TSA goons crawling around his aircraft is a real threat to Dr. Paul's security. The TSA threatens all our security with their Unconstitutional antics, but the Paul family has more to lose than most of us.

I don't like the idea of sharing any personal information with TSA thugs or whoever might overhear those nutty Behavior Detection Voodoo Interrogations. I really don't want the TSA touching me and my family with their foul gloves or rooting through our possessions. They're the creepiest thing to hit the USA in a very long time.

    Kudos to the Pauls.

Digital Journal: TSA agents swarm Ron Paul's plane, demand explosives check

A group of TSA agents attempted to stop Texas Congressman Ron Paul and his family from boarding their private plane at a small airport in Clearwater, Florida on Tuesday, insisting that they submit to an extensive screening and bomb check before flying. Paul, his wife, Carol, and one of their granddaughters were preparing to depart when eight TSA agents confronted them, according to Lew Rockwell, Paul's former chief of staff. The agents reviewed the pilots' paperwork, but demanded that they be allowed to search the aircraft for explosives. The pilots objected, pointing out that the fuel-laden airplane is an explosive itself.

Lew Rockwell @ LRC Blog: HOT: Ron Paul Left Tampa Yesterday

Ron, Carol, and one of their granddaughters left the GOP snake pit yesterday afternoon, but the State was not yet through with them. At the little airport in Clearwater, 8 TSA agents descended on them and ordered them not to board their private plane. First, the pilots, the airplane, and the passengers would have to be screened in great detail, because Romney might be nearby. After a long examination of the pilots and their credentials, the agents said they had to check the plane for explosives. One of the pilots noted that the plane, full of aviation fuel, was already a bomb. Then Carol Paul, who has a pacemaker, refused to be screened, and an aide started taking video of the whole rotten process. At that point, the TSA backed down and let them through, to Texas and freedom.

Washington Times: TSA detains, interrogates Ron Paul's family and aids

After the Republican National Convention, Rep. Ron Paul’s family and aides were detained and interrogated in Clearwater, Florida yesterday. Paul’s family and aides attempted to depart for Texas when eight Transportation Security Administration (TSA) agents refused to allow their passage. According to Lew Rockwell, Paul's former chief of staff, agents first questioned the pilot’s credentials, then insisted the passengers and plane be searched for explosives. TSA agents did not cite any specific threat, but insinuated the Paul family was a threat to Mitt Romney, claiming the nominee “might be nearby.”
The pilot reminded agents the plane itself, filled with fuel, was a bomb. Agents persisted with demands that the passengers be thoroughly examined, but Carol, Paul’s 76-year-old wife, has a pacemaker. She refused to submit to a search while an aide began recording the event. Eventually, the agents relented.
Private aircraft are not subjected to the same rigorous security screenings of commercial aircraft, leading some to believe Paul's family was targeted by the agency.
    ...
The video of the incident remains private, but supporters are hoping it will be released. “The TSA is not a hapless organization with silos at individual airports, but a massively bureaucratic police force far outside of its original purpose to prevent another 9/11 attack,” said a poster on a Facebook thread decrying the incident. “The duty of the government is to protect our rights, not to destroy them. This is America, not wartime Germany.”

  14. I think I'm missing the importance of a detail... why do all the articles note that Carol Paul has a pacemaker and this is why she refused to be searched? What kind of a search were they doing that would contraindicate a pacemaker?

Probably related to their demand that she go through a body scanner.

People with pacemakers were told for years that the standard WTMD wouldn't interfere, but they shouldn't stop in the WTMD. The wands were strictly verboten for people with pacemakers.

If it was at the plane, they were probably using handheld metal detectors. There was no mention of Nude-O-Scopes being involved.

  17. So they really were demanding they get off of their GA aircraft, go inside the terminal, and go through standard screening? Wow. That's absurd.

ETA: Missed Mike's post. That makes some sense. I thought there weren't any HHMD's anymore, though. Just not for people who really need them, I guess.

Good for feisty Mrs. Paul! Good grief, they were going to screen for a private aircraft? Show me where they have the authority to do that. There's stupid, f'n stupid, and TSA stupid.
