The Transportation Security Administration is dropping nearly half a billion dollars on compact, next-generation body scanners to better detect concealed explosives, such as the newfangled underwear bomb recently seized in Yemen. The imaging machines, like other upgraded systems, hide a passenger’s nude body from TSA officers by displaying generic representations of appendages with suspect items flagged. ​

Two five-year contracts, each worth $245 million, have been awarded to L-3 Communications Corp. and American Science and Engineering Inc., according to government databases. The procurement documents released during the past week do not disclose the number of machines purchased or name the airports where they will be stationed.​

 

I think it's just a matter of time when it will be mandatory that everyone go through these machines. There will no long be an option to opt out.

 

I thought they weren't given any more money for these pieces of crap. Wasn't that part of a budget cut? Or is that only in effect next year?

 

So what will TSA do when I say I can't lift my arms over my shoulders, shoot me like an injured horse?

 

They'll make you go through it and then pat you down.......

 

So they're spending more money on scanners that they still haven't bothered to get public comment on as per the court's order?

 

Here's my optimistic take on this. Maybe they're trying to blow all the cash and line their cronies pockets before the body scanner program gets shut down.

They won't be done deploying the MMW scanners for another year and are replacing 244 nearly new BKSX scanners over the next year.

Now they want to start all over again at a half a billion dollars. This is worse than the puffer mess and there really needs to be a Congressional investigation into this waste. I know I'll be writing Issa and other sympathetic legislators to bitch about this debacle.

 

With TSA buying another 1/2 million dollars worth of Strip Search Machines proves that if TSA ever gets around to complying with the Administrative Procedures Act the publics comments will have no bearing on the continued roll out of these disgusting devices.
