Do we want to appoint an official Travel Underground greeter? Is it necessary or make it an at-will basis amongst members?

Maybe a new-members meet 'n' greet subforum? A lot of forum sites have those.

Does anyone mind if I get rid of the "New Member" label? I've always hated labeling newbies.

Cool by me if you want to axe it. I never really liked the "postcountocracy" some forums exhibit either.

No problem whatsoever - notice in fact I didn't use new member anywhere in my opening remarks ;)

I think it's important to welcome new members.

However, in many fora there are those who consistently welcome new members, so that sometimes a new member doesn't receive the welcome. Perhaps we could delegate 3 or 4 of our core group to make certain to welcome the new members so no one feels left out?

I'd like to volunteer, being among the founding group and all, but what kind of response time are we looking for? I may not always be able to respond right away during the work day as my job tends to have activity spikes wherein a lot of things go wrong that I have to fix.

I nominate CelticWhisper as our official greeter - do I hear a second?

    I second that motion :)

I don't think a new member would need to be welcomed right away and I am sure others will welcome them anyhow. If CelticWhisper wishes to take on that task I am in favor and will offer my assistance if you guys approve.

I'm also willing to send a welcome when I see the new member.

Always good that we all try, I think having a couple or 3 of us designated to do it ensures that everybody is welcomed. Even if they are AFS or TSA.

Agreed. I'll try to get to people ASAP but I know that eventually one will slip by me and I'd feel terrible if that person felt singled out because I missed them.

What? Are you saying that your job is more important than kvetching about TSA?

Maybe you need to reconsider your priorities...

I think a welcome to new members within 48 hours is doable, but I would like to see 24 as our target.

Okay, next question - where do I go to see the latest members beyond the single most recent?

Do we want to have people start threads introducing themselves if they want the formal welcome? Or should we have them post in a single thread?

I don't want to get into the situation of having to make threads for new members as they register and then miss people and have them feel slighted. Especially when membership starts ramping up.

Good question, I haven't seen that in the admin options.

Definitely not there. vBulletin has a nice "list new users" option that lists everyone, newest first.

I can probably cc: you on the registration emails. Can you (or someone) send me copies of the emails you received from TUG when you registered? XenForo consists of almost 2500 files, mostly PHP source & templates, so it would help to know what to look for.

(never mind the request for copies of the emails -- with add-ons available, I don't have to go looking for the code/templates to modify myself)

How about if it were REALLY fast, as in immediate?

There is an add-on for XenForo that will allow us to do that (Welcome conversation, welcome thread post, notification to list of new members).

There's also an add-on for an invite system.

This thread's going to be active for a while, so I'm moving it up to the Comments & Question forum.

As in auto-reply? If so, let's enable then as others see our membership grow we can respond with personalized welcomes.

The initial greeting would be computer generated. The notification list would trigger any eventual personal replies.
