Local TSA agents find loaded gun, officials believe passenger forgot it was there

A woman checking in for an early Friday flight at Coastal Carolina Regional Airport was arrested for attempting to board a plane with a loaded handgun among her belongings. Min Yeong Parry, 37, of 106 Croatan Woods Drive, New Bern, was arrested and charged with carrying a concealed weapon in an airport terminal. She was later released on a $1,000 secured bond. The Transportation Security Authority agents detected the loaded handgun during her screening before 5 a.m., said Tom Braaten, airport director. He said the TSA agents called over a Craven County sheriff’s deputy who was on duty there. “We ...

“I don’t think they are necessarily trying to board with a gun,” he said. “Sometimes they store it in the suitcase and just forget it’s there when they pack.” Braaten said a more familiar scenario is having “people who wanted to check them in a checked bag but didn’t have an appropriate box. We’re not allowed to check bags with guns unless they are property secured and boxed.” In those instances, he said, the sheriff’s deputy takes them, they do background checks, and, if there is no record, they are allowed to board a later flight.

TSA nabs Arizona traveler trying to carry on Jesse James knives

The Transportation Security Administration confiscated a Jesse James bullet knife and gun knife from a traveler flying between Yuma and Phoenix during the holiday weekend. The knives, which come in a tin box and sell for $11.50 online, were in the carry-on bag of a 55-year-old male passenger and detected during the screening process. The passenger was arrested on an unrelated charge and the knives were taken by law enforcement. The traveler will face a civil penalty, too.

TSA finds 2 guns in Atlanta airport screenings

The Transportation Security Administration says its screeners found loaded guns in carry-on bags of two passengers trying to board flights at Atlanta's airport — the first time the agency has detected firearms at the airport since Georgia's new law relaxing carrying restrictions took effect last week. The TSA said both weapons — a .40-caliber handgun and a .22-caliber revolver — were found at security checkpoints three hours apart Wednesday at Hartsfield-Jackson International Airport. Police interviewed and released both passengers, but the TSA said each will likely be assessed a federal civil penalty of $3,000 minimum. Since July 1, Georgia law ...

Still showing up at TSA airport security: Guns, knives, bear spray, grenades.

Here’s some of what the TSA found during one recent week: 42 firearms, 74 credit card knives, inert grenades and a live smoke grenade, eight ounces of bear repellant, knives in the handles of brushes and combs, and 17 stun guns. Of the 42 firearms, 35 were loaded and nine had rounds chambered. TSA keeps a jaunty blog reporting such finds and offering tips on how to avoid embarrassment if not prosecution. “Sure, it’s great to share the things that our officers are finding, but at the same time, each time we find a dangerous item, the line is slowed ...
